QC Associate

Background
Portico, a
not-for-profit electronic archiving service is seeking a QC
Specialist for its Princeton, New Jersey office. The position
reports to either Set-up Operations Manager for content
preparation activities or to Content Ingest Lead for content
processing activities.
Portico's
mission is to preserve scholarly literature published in
electronic form and ensure that these materials remain
accessible to future scholars, researchers and students. In
pursuit of this mission Portico has developed a technological
infrastructure and an economic model to sustain an archive of
electronic scholarly resources, beginning with
electronic-journals. Portico is actively serving publishers and
libraries and recently began ingest and archival operations for
some of the more than 5300 journal titles committed the
archive. As a new organization working in the relatively new
field of electronic archiving, Portico values teamwork; the
ability to be flexible and rapidly adjust to shifting priorities
in the midst of a new initiative with uncertain outcomes; and an
ability to meet established deadlines.

Responsibilities
The QC
Associate is primarily responsible for performing content
processing activities and ensuring that incoming publishers’
content is processed in accordance with the best archival
policies and quality control guidelines. The Associate
systematically carries out planned activities during testing
transforms and ingesting production content; and consistently
meets or exceeds the established individual goals and deadlines.
The position’s
responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Act as
a quality control analyst for testing transforms and/or
archiving publishers’ content
- Load,
schedule and process batched content
- Inspect
content for potential transform issues, data anomalies, and
other exceptions
- Assist
senior QC specialists in content processing activities
- Resolve
problems either generated by the system or discovered during
human inspection; where necessary, delegate problems to
support and/or technical staff

Maintain and track individual activity logs and processing
metrics
- Follow
guidelines and best practices in quality control of archival
content
The
position calls for a self-directed, self-motivated individual
who feels comfortable taking on a broad and changing set of
responsibilities; seeks out additional work/responsibilities in
a fast-paced and rapidly evolving organizational environment;
and looks for pro-active ways to improve and enhance
communication and workflow processes across various teams. The
ideal candidate will
have prior experience
working in a
scholarly publishing production operation,
quality control
environment and/or support centers and will possess
exceptionally strong problem solving skills.
Required Qualifications

Hands-on experience in scholarly publishing production,
quality control, copy editing, and/or technical support
environment
- Working
knowledge of text markup languages such as SGML, XML, and
HTML

Experience in testing and inspecting complex textual data

Excellent organizational skills, with a strong attention to
detail, a proven track record of meeting deadlines, and a
willingness to work in a hands-on environment
- Strong
analytical skills for effective problem solving
- Solid
understanding of quality control methods, procedures, and
guidelines
- Working
knowledge with Microsoft Office products

Familiarity with content management and workflow systems

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education, training, and
